Louis XVI Style Water Gilded Mirror

A Louis XVI-style water gilded mirror in the period style, inspired by a Louis XVI girandole. The original pair of mirrors was auctioned at Christie’s European Works of Art on 25th June 1997.

This mirror has been hand-carved from solid mahogany and gilded in gold leaf, creating a sumptuous finish.

The frame is boldly pierced and intricately cast with foliate scrolling ornament. The cresting is modeled as ribbon-tied crossed quivers and torches, with tassel terminals. Further detailing and definition are skillfully applied in the gesso layer. The 23¾ carat gold leaf is finished with a striking ‘bright and matt’ effect, with highlighted areas burnished with an agate stone. There is also subtle distressing to expose the bole beneath, enhancing the antique look.

This beautiful mirror would complement both traditional and contemporary interiors, serving as a wonderfully crafted statement piece in any room.
